Arsenal missed a chance to move up to third spot following a shock 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on Monday night.
Surprisingly Joe Willock featured ahead of Mesut Ozil for the Gunners, as Unai Emery instigated just a single change from the home win over AFC Bournemouth before the international break.
Arsenal made a positive start following start to the encounter, but the Blades threw numbers behind their every move to leave the contest hanging in the balance.
That spell of positivity fell apart on the half-hour mark as Lys Mousset helped Jack O'Connell's goal-bound header from a corner into an unguarded net to put the home side ahead.
Dean Henderson ensured the hosts went to the break in front with an outrageous save from Granit Xhaka's pile-driver from outside the area.
Arsenal introduced the game's very first substitution at the start of the second half, as Emery pushed for the equaliser with the arrival of Dani Ceballos in place of Willock.
Sheffield looked to lock up the result 12 minutes following the break with the introduction of Billy Sharp for the goal-scorer Mousset.
John Fleck however almost doubled the home side's advantage on 61 minutes, but the midfielder's flashed against the side-netting following a good build-up close to the area.
Fleck went close again with another strong attempt five minutes later, but Gunners shot-stopper Bernd Leno smothered the effort albeit at the second time of asking.
The Gunners silently pushed for the leveller with time running out, but their few half-chances failed to bother Henderson.
Emery's side dismal away form continued at the end as the Blades pick up their third win of the season to move into ninth place while the visitors drop to fifth.
