An own goal from DeAndre Yedlin three minutes from time saw Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-1 in an English Premier League match at St. James Park on Sunday.
It was a slow start to the match with both teams unable to hold onto the ball long enough to build sustained periods of pressure.
The first decent effort on goal came in the 17th minute when Antonio Rudiger latched onto a loose ball inside the Newcastle box, but the under no pressure the Chelsea man fired inches wide.
Seven minute later Eden Hazard took a short pass in his stride and attempted to beat the keeper from mid-range, but his stinging effort shaved the wrong side of the post.
In the 34th minute, the home side fashioned their first scoring chance when Jose Rondon got onto the end of a pin-point cross, but his header went just over the Chelsea goal.
A minute later the action was at the other end when Pedro drove into the Newcastle box, but his 16-yard shot lacked direction and flew over the target.
Neither side could break the deadlock before the half time whistle.
Five minutes into the second half Chelsea came close to finding the game's opening goal when Cesar Azpilicueta unleashed a powerful shot from 18-yards out, but his effort was well-saved by the Newcastle keeper.
The next decent chance only came in the 73rd minute when Antonio Rudiger created space of himself on the edge of the box, but the Chelsea man's shot came back off the crossbar.
Three minutes later, Chelsea's pressure finally paid off when Fabian Schar committed a foul inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Hazard stepped up for Chelsea and made no mistake with the penalty to make it 1-0.
Newcastle managed to level matters in the 83rd minute when Joselu latched onto a cross from DeAndre Yedlin and powerfully headed home, 1-1.
Newcastle's joy, though, was short-lived when Yedlin went from hero to zero after deflecting the ball into his own net in the 87th minute to give Chelsea a 2-1 win.
