English Premier League Report: Manchester United v Arsenal 05 December 2018

English Premier League

Result: Manchester United 2-2 Arsenal

Date: 05 December 2018

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester United and Arsenal had to settled for a share of the spoils after playing out a four-goal thriller at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Jose Mourinho surprised many with his starting line up as Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku dropped to the bench, while Diogo Dalot was handed his first Premier League start.

The opening exchanges proved to be an open affair, with both sides showing attacking intent, although clear-cut chances were hard to come by in the opening 20 minutes.

However, Arsenal were in front on 25 minutes as De Gea failed to hold on to Shkodran Mustafi's header, which managed to sail over the line, according to the goal-line technology.

Parity was restored five minutes later as Ander Herrera reacted quickest to rebound and fired across the face of goal, where Martial was on hand to fire home.

There was a good tempo to the game for the rest of the half, but both sides were unable to create another opening as they went into the break level pegging.

Both sides continued playing at the same tempo as the first half, although the Red Devils did look a bit more threatening in the final third.

United were forced into a change after 64 minutes as Martial made way for Lukaku, while Unai Emery threw on Alexandre Lacazette moments later.

The Gunners restored their lead in the 68th minute when Marcos Rojo deflected the ball into his own net after the Argentine initially lost possession.

The hosts hit back a minute later as the Gunners defence failed to deal with a long ball, which allowed Jesse Lingard to sneak and poke the ball beyond Bernd Leno.

With 15 minutes remaining, Mourinho opted throw on Marouane Fellaini and Pogba for Lingard and Herrera as they went in search of three points.

Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages, but it was not meant to be as the encounter ended 2-2.
