Result: Chelsea 1-0 Norwich City
Date: 14 July 2020
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea cemented third spot in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, with Olivier Giroud netting the winner against relegated Norwich City.
Frank Lampard rang the changes following the 3-0 loss to Sheffield United, as Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso returned along with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Matteo Kovavcic and Olivier Giroud.
The Blues were eager to get off to a good start but they had to wait until the 20th minute for an opening as Giroud saw his close-range strike turned away by Tim Krul.
Giroud squandered another chance 10 minutes later when he scuffed an inviting cross from Cesar Azpilicueta while Loftus-Cheek headed wide soon after.
After hitting the woodwork through Christian Pulisic, the Blues eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime through Giroud's close-range header.
Despite having nothing left to play for, Norwich showed no real attacking intent in the first half although they came out stronger in the second as Lewis went close just after the hour mark.
Pulisic nearly put his name on the score-sheet with 15 minutes left on the clock after being teed up by Giroud, but Krul was on hand to deny the American.
Lampard's men did push for a second goal in the latter stages, but one was enough to seal three points and cement third spot for another week.
The Blues will now prepare for this weekend's FA Cup semi-final tie aganst Manchester United, who have already beaten them three times this season.
