Result: Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal
Date: 29 October 2016
Venue: Stadium of Light
Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud ran riot for Arsenal, as they claimed a 4-1 win over struggling Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The Gunners were without the services of Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla, while Steven Pienaar returned to the line-up for the Black Cats.
After a quiet start, Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock after 19 minutes when Alexis Sanchez powered home a header at the near post, after getting on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross.
Sunderland were dealt a low after 38 minutes when captain John O'Shea picked up a hamstring injury and was forced off.
The visitors did carve out a couple more chances, Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Goalkeeper pulled off some fine saves to keep the score at 1-0.
David Moyes' charges struggled to create chances and hardly managed to get into the final third.
However, Sunderland were awarded a penalty after 64 minutes when Watmore was brought down by Petr Cech. Jermaine Defoe stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 1-1.
Arsene Wenger responded by introducing Olivier Giroud in the 70th minute, while Sunderland introduced Adnan Januzaj for Pienaar.
Giroud's impact was instant, as the Frenchman turned home Keiran Gibb's low cross inside the six-yard box.
The Gunners grabbed the third goal in the 75th minute as Giroud rose well to glance home a header after getting on the end of Mesut Ozil's corner.
The result was sealed two minutes later, as Sanchez showed great composure in the six-yards box to outfox the goalkeeper and a defender to poke home, 4-1.
