English Premier League
Full Time: Stoke City 0-1 Liverpool
Venue: Britannia Stadium
Date: 09 August 2015
A goal three minutes from time by Philippe Coutinho handed Liverpool a 1-0 win over Stoke City in their first 2015/16 English Premier League game of the season at Britannia stadium on Sunday.
The home side started the better of the two teams with Charlie Adam having the first strike on goal in the eighth minute, but his effort from the edge of the box went narrowly wide.
Ten minutes later Jonathan Walters played Mame Diouf into space just outside the box, but Senegalese international saw his shot well-saved by the Liverpool keeper.
Both sides struggled for fluidity in the final third thereafter and chances on goal were few and far between.
Adam had the last shot on goal in the half when his 22-yard attempt went inches wide of the post.
The second half was similar to the first half with both teams keeping it tight at the back and offering very little in attack.
Liverpool's first decent chance of the match came in the 68th minute when Martin Skrtel met a cross from James Milner, but his header was well-saved by the Stoke keeper.
The game looked to be heading for a stalemate until Philippe Coutinho stole victory for the Reds in the 87th minute with a long range shot that found the corner of the net, 1-0.
