Can Jose Mourinho Upset His Former Mentor Louis Van Gaal

When Premier League leaders, Chelsea, travel to Manchester United today Jose Mourinho will face his former mentor Louis van Gaal. The game sees Mourinho facing Louis van Gaal, only for the second time after Mourinho's Inter overcame Van Gaal's Bayern Munich in the 2010 Champions League final. Many expect a war of words when two egos like Mourinho and Van Gaal meet each other, but their former relationship seems to put a curtain of respect over the fixture. While Mourinho continuously targets opposition managers like Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini with his mind games, he has been notably quiet ahead of this clash. So where is all this respect coming from? Some experts suggest Van Gaal had a more important influence on Mourinho than Sir Bobby Robson, who turned him from translator into assistant manager at Sporting and later took him with to Barcelona. When Robson left Camp Nou, Mourinho stayed and a certain Louis van Gaal took charge of the team. The Dutchman and Portuguese combined their studious approach to the game and Barcelona won La Liga twice in Van Gaal's first two years as a coach. Van Gaal saw more than just a number two in Mourinho and let him develop his own coaching style. He even entrusted him with coaching duties of Barcelona B as well as certain trophies like Copa Catalunya. Looking at how much trust and support Van Gaal put in the young Mourinho, then only 37-years-old it is of no surprise that the Portuguese has so much respect for the Dutchman. However, he will surely want to keep his 100 percent record against his former mentor and make another important statement that the title is Chelsea's to lose this year.
