Venue: Red Bull Arena Leipzig
Bayern Munich missed the chance to move top of the Bundesliga standings after playing to a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig on Saturday.
Niko Kovac dropped Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic to the bench following their trouncing of Mainz before the international break in favour of Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry. The Bavarians had a dream start as Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the third minute with a composed finish past goakeeper Peter Gulasci, following a through ball from Muller. The visitors had a penalty claim eight minutes before the break after Lucas Hernandez collided with Marcel Sabitzer inside the box and the referee initially pointed to the spot, but changed his mind after viewing the incident on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). However, Hernandez conceded a penalty in stoppages of the first-half time after clipping Yussuf Poulsen, Emil Forsberg stepped up and buried the spot-kick past shot-stoppr Manuel Neuer. After a fast start to the second stanza, particularly by the hosts, Kovac raised eyebrows in the 63rd minute with a defensive substitution, after taking off Muller and bringing on defensive midfielder Corentin Tolisso to shore up the midfield. Kingsley Coman almost restored the lead for Bayen with 20 minutes remaining after blasting a strike from range that Gulasci tipped on to the post but the visitors could not capitalise from the rebound. Timo Werner almost snatched a last-minute winner for Leipzig after going clear on goal but his strike was heroically saved by Neuer as Leipzig moved top of the log, while Bayern find themselves in third spot.
