Borussia Dortmund missed the chance to move third in the Bundesliga after suffering a 2-1 loss at the hands of Hoffenheim on Friday evening.
Dortmund made two changes from their high-scoring draw with RB Leipzig, as Mario Gotze took the place of captain Marco Reus who sustained a muscle strain at training while Nico Schulz replaced Raphael Guerreiro in the starting line-up.
The visitors started on the front foot and they were rewarded with the opening goal in the 17th minute after Gotze smashed home a first-time strike from Achraf Hakimi's inviting cross.
Hoffenheim had their shot-stopper Oliver Baumann to thank for keeping them just one goal behind going to the break, as he first denied Hakimi with eight minutes remaining of the first stanza before keeping out Thorgan Hazard's thumping strike that seemed destined for the top corner.
Dortmund kept on pressurising the hosts in the early exchanges of the second stanza and they came close again Julian Brandt's goal-bound effort was turned away by Baumann.
Hoffenheim eventually levelled matters with 11 minutes remaining courtesy of Sargis Adamyan's strike from the rebound after Locadia forced a save out of Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki.
The hosts then went ahead with three minutes remaining after Andrej Kramaric headed home Adamyan's cross from close range to seal three points for the home side.
