Manchester United target Jadon Sancho was left out of the squad as Borussia Dortmund thumped Freiburg 4-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon.
Dortmund made four changes from their UEFA Super Cup final defeat to Bayern Munich, as Jude Bellingham, Axel Witsel, Raphael Guerreiro and Giovanni Reyna all returned to boost the side while Sancho missed out once again.
The game was surprising played a slow tempo with both goalkeepers, Marwin Hitz and Florian Muller of Freiburg barely having to make a save in the opening 20 minutes of the encounter.
Haaland injected some life into the match by breaking the deadlock for Lucien Favre's charges on the half-hour mark with a composed finish inside the box after he was setup by Reyna.
Mats Hummels had a big chance to double the lead for Dortmund with seven minutes left of the first stanza from point-blank range but his strike towards the bottom corner was saved by Muller, who kept Freiburg in the game going to the break.
However, Dortmund had a dream start in the second stanza as Emre Can got the second goal two minutes after the break with a header off Reyna's corner.
Haaland then completed his brace in the 66th minute after latching onto a through ball from Reyna before firing past Muller for Dortmund's third goal on the day.
Felix Passlack rounded off the rout for Dortmund in stoppage time with a close-range finish after he was teed up by Haaland to condemn the visitors to their first defeat.
