Bayern Munich missed the chance to move top of the Bundesliga table after throwing away a two-goal lead to 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday night.

Bayern have made two changes from their UEFA Champions League outing this week, with Marcel Sabitzer and Joshua Kimmich returning while Thomas Muller missed out through illness.

Dortmund, meanwhile, recalled former Bayern defender Mats Hummels in place of Thomas Meunier while Donyell Malen replaced Karim Adeyemi in the attack.

After a cagey opening, Dortmund went close to opening the scoring on 21 minutes when Malen surged towards the Bayern before seeing his strike deflect just wide of the upright.

The opening goal would fall to Bayern in the 33rd minute as Jamal Musiala did well to set up Leon Goretzka, who fired home the edge of the box with a low strike.

Dortmund did go close to pulling themselves soon after when Julian Brandt picked up a loose ball and played in Malen, who saw his first-time strike saved by Manuel Neuer.

However, Julian Nagelsmann's charges got the second goal eight minutes after the halftime break, with Leroy Sane firing a low shot through the hands of Meyer, who should have done better with the attempted save.

Meyer redeemed himself in the 64th minute when Musiala was presented with a chance in the box, but the Dortmund shot-stopper made a vital block on the line.

Dortmund managed to pull a goal back with 16 minutes to go, as Youssoufa Moukoko collected a pass from fellow substitute Anthony Modeste before firing past Neuer to set up a nervy finish.

The home side should have been level in the 83rd minute when Adeyemi put the ball on plate for Modesete in the box but with only Neuer to beat, the strike scuffed his strike allowed and the goalkeeper to clear.

Modeste made amends in the fifth minute of time added on after bagging the equaliser with a lovely strike to secure his side a share of the spoils after an impressive comeback.
