Bundesliga Report: Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich 17 October 2021

A rampant Bayern Munich thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 5-1 to reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon.

Result: Bayer Leverkusen 1-5 Bayern Munich

Date: 17 October 2021

Venue: BayArena

The Bavarians started an unchanged eleven in this top-of-the-table clash following their 2-1 loss at home to Eintracht Frankfurt prior to the International break.

Bayern showed the ideal start on three minutes after Robert Lewandowski charged on a low ball towards the far post from Dayot Upamecano to execute a smart back-heel finish.

A speculative shot on the edge of the area by Leroy Sane at the midway stage should've put Bayern two goals up, but the ball bounced off the post before going across goal.

The second came on the half-hour mark after a surge up-field saw Alphonso Davies leave a loose pass for Lewandowski to take control and beat Lukas Hradecky inside the centre of the area.

Bayern made it three minutes apart as a corner-kick coincided with Thomas Muller, who from a clever angle fired in off his thigh and into the net.

The reigning champions cruised following ten minutes before halftime as Serge Gnabry cut across to get on the end of Muller's ball for a smart dink beyond Hradecky.

Gnabry attained a brace shortly thereafter through a telling bottom-corner finish from Leon Goretzka's incisive pass, with Davies substituted for Josip Stanisic.

Further activity on Bayern's bench ahead of the restart saw Goretzka withdrawn and Marcel Sabitzer introduced, as Leverkusen put on Edmond Tapsoba for Paulinho.

Leverkusen denied the host a clean-sheet ten minutes from resumption after Florian Wirtz ball in behind met Patrik Schick, who clipped in off the left post following a smart run-up.

The Bavarians looked to a sixth in the latter minutes, but Niklas Sule, Sane and Sabitzer didn't find the desired target as the match ended.\
