Borussia Dortmund were handed their first defeat of the Bundesliga season after going down 2-0 to Augsburg on Saturday afternoon.
Dortmund had only one enforced change from their thumping win over Borussia Monchengladbach, as Thorgan Hazard was ruled with injury but Raphael Guerreiro returned to boost the side while Marco Reus was fit to be on the bench.
Alex Witsel came close to grabbing an early lead for the visitors in the sixth minute with a volley on the edge of the box that brought the best out of goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz.
Jude Bellingham had a great chance to break the deadlock for BVB just before the half-hour mark with a threatening strike inside the box that was brilliantly parried away by Gikiewicz.
Augsburg broke the deadlock from a corner five minutes before the break after Felix Uduokhai headed home a header from the edge of the six-yard box and the hosts went to the break leading by an odd goal.
Daniel Caliguiri gave Heiko Herrlich's troops a two-goal lead nine minutes from the break with a sweet strike from the centre of the box after a through ball from Florian Niederlechner.
Dortmund manager Lucien Favre made a double change on the hour-mark, bringing on Julian Brandt in place of Guerreiro in a tactical switch while Reus came on for Jude Bellingham for fresh legs upfront.
Carlos Gruezo came close to making it 3-0 for Augsburg with 22 minutes remaining with a cracking long range strike that sailed inches over the bar.
Favre's charges were all over Augsburg in the closing phase but not finding clear openings and Mats Hummels had a glorious chance in stoppage time having the goal at his mercy from a corner but he mistimed his header that went wide but the hosts were not in danger of losing the three points, as they grabbed top spot on the log with back-to-back wins.
