Bundesliga match report Bayern v RB Leipzig 05 February 2022

Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to nine points after edging RB Leipzig in a five-goal thriller on Saturday evening.

Bundesliga

Result: Bayern Munich 3-2 RB Leipzig

Date: 05 February 2022

Venue: Allianz Arena

Bayern were unchanged from the side that hammered Hertha Berlin, as Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane flanked Robert Lewandowski upfront while the Red Bulls were bolstered by the return of Dani Olmo.

The hosts had a perfect start after Muller gave them the lead with a tap-in after goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi parried Lewandowski's shot on his path from a counter-attack.

The game was becoming an open contest and the visitors eventually levelled matters just before the half-hour mark after Andre Silva headed home a chip over shot-stopper Manuel Neuer by Konrad Laimer.

Kingsley Coman came close to restoring the lead for the Bavarians ten minutes before the half-time break with a lobbed effort that tipped into the post by Gulacsi.

Bayern had a goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) just after that for a foul after Muller had found the back of the net, but Lewandowski restored their lead on the stroke of halftime with a powerful header at the near post after a cross by Coman.

The game continued to flow from end to end early in the second stanza and Christopher Nkunku equalised for Leipzig with a shot through the legs of Neuer after a through ball by Laimer.

Julian Nagelsmann's charges went ahead again just before the hour-mark thanks to an own goal by Josko Gvardiol, who deflected Gnabry's cross past Gulacsi.

Domenico Tedesco made a double change after that, as Emil Forsberg replaced Olmo in attack and Amadou Haidara came on for Laimer in midfield.

The visitors were pressurising Bayern in the closing phase, as Dominik Szoboszlai forced a save out of Neuer 18 minutes before time in the bottom corner.

Neuer was required again eight minutes before time to deny Forsberg, as Nagelsmann's troops held on to extend their lead at the top of the standings to nine points.
