As always, FIFA's The Best Men's Player prize was decided by four voting panels, namely national team coaches, national team captains, journalists, and fans, with each category having a weighting of 25%.
Each and every voter selected their personal top three, with the first-placed player receiving five points, the second-placed getting three and the third-placed player claiming one point.
All points were added up to produce the overall winner, with Robert Lewandowski receiving 52 voting points, Ronaldo 38 and Messi 32.
National team captains largely favoured Lewandowski to win the main award, and Ronaldo also selected him as his first choice.
Unlike in previous years, though, the Portugal captain picked Messi in second place, followed by Kylian Mbappe in third.
The Argentina captain, meanwhile, had no space for his rival among his final three, opting for Neymar, Mbappe and Lewandowski.

The Best FIFA Men's Player of 2020 himself voted for Thiago Alcantara ahead of Neymar and Kevin De Bruyne, snubbing both his closest rivals.
Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, meanwhile, picked Lewandowski for his first spot, but did not select Messi or Ronaldo, opting instead for De Bruyne in second and Alcantara in third.
