A panel of FIFA legends, including Cafu, Diego Maradona, Carles Puyol and Jay-Jay Okocha, among others, compiled the initial 24-man shortlist, which included Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and was announced in August.
Subsequently the voting period ran from 21 August until 7 September and was open for voters in four evenly-weighted categories: national team coaches, national team captains, select media and fans from around the world, each giving their preferred option five points, second-choice three and third place one point.
For the first time, FIFA also changed the assessed period from the award running along the calendar year to it being based on the 2016/17 season.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the award in 2016, is once again the clear favourite to lift the prestigious price. His long-standing rival Lionel Messi and Neymar, for his final season at FC Barcelona, are the other two nominees.
The 30-year-old guided Real to four trophies in 2016/17, namely the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, and already lifted the 2017 UEFA European Player of the Year.
The Portuguese won the award, which is the successor of the FIFA Ballon d'Or after joint organisers FIFA and France Football split up last year*, in three of the past four years and four times overall.
If he would indeed again beat Messi to this year's award, he would equal the Argentine's overall haul of five wins, claiming the prestigious award in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016 so far, while Messi won it in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015.
