Messi and Ronaldo are the two favourites to lift the 2016 Ballon d'Or award for the European Footballer of the Year – players from all nationalities playing in Europe can be nominated.
After ending their association with FIFA for the FIFA Ballon d'Or, France Football have reverted back to their original format from before 2010, and will announce the 2016 winner from 18:30 SA time.
Messi won the last version of the Ballon d'Or in 2009, before the award was handed out in collaboration with football's world governing body as the FIFA Ballon d'Or over the past six years – with the Argentine winning four of them.
His former teammate and African legend Samuel Eto'o is one of many who believe Messi should win the prestigious award again this year.
"Cristiano Ronaldo is also writing a history in football, but I prefer Messi," the Cameroonian.
Former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello, pehaps surprisingly, has also insisted the Blaugrana talisman deserves the Ballon d'Or, saying: "The Ballon d'Or is for Messi. Then it would make another ceremony for the other players."

Former Barcelona wizard Ronaldinho, Brazil coach Tite and Neymar are others who are supporting Messi's case this year.
