Today, Mohamed Abdelmonem is one of the most highly rated defenders on the African continent.
At 25 years old, the Zagazig native already has seven titles to his name and is regarded as key member of the Ahly squad that triumphed in the Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League last season.
Abdelmonem is rumoured to be attracting interest from Europe, but, according to former Al Ahly player Adel Abdel Rahman, the Egypt international successes could have been realised a lot sooner had it not been for the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician.
Speaking to in a radio interview, as per Ahly Online, the north African tactician says that he suggested that the young star be integrated into the Ahly as a teenager, but Mosimane was not a big fan of the idea.
"I recommended that Mohamed Abdelmonem play in the first team when he was 16 years old and asked him to join the Smouha team while I was leading the Alexandria team, and then he returned," he said.
"Pitso Mosimane said about Abdelmonem that he is young in age and short in stature."
