Former Orlando Pirates star Luis Boa Morte will begin his role as a national team head coach of an African nation at the end of the season.

It has been confirmed that a former Orlando Pirates star will leave his post with a Premier League side in order to become the head coach of an African team at the end of the season.

Following a brief stint with the Buccaneers during the 2011/12 season, Luis Boa Morte will be returning to the African continent, except this time it will be as a coach as it has been made official that he will take up the coaching responsibilities for Guinea-Bissau.

His current club, Fulham, made the news official, with the former attacker set to succeed Baciro Cande, who managed the Djurtus at three Africa Cup of Nations, the most recent of which coming earlier this year in Ivory Coast.

"The Club can confirm that Luis Boa Morte will leave Fulham at the end of the season to take up a position as Head Coach of Guinea-Bissau," an official statement from the west London club read.

"Boa Morte – who already held legend status at Craven Cottage after scoring 54 times in 250 appearances during his playing days – returned to the Club as First Team Coach following the appointment of Marco Silva in the summer of 2021.

"An integral part of the backroom staff that saw us win the Championship in that first season, Boa Morte was then part of the team that helped re-establish Fulham as a top-flight outfit as we finished 10th in the Premier League.

"Everyone at Fulham would like to thank Boa for his efforts since his return to the Club, and wishes him the best of luck in this next chapter when he departs following our season finale away to Luton Town."
