10 Stars Who Recently Chose Africa Over Europe

10 Stars Who Recently Chose Africa Over Europe

Sebastien Haller (born in France, became an international with Ivory Coast)

With three Premier League stars reportedly set to switch their international allegiance to Ghana ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, here are 10 players who recently decided to represent African nations instead of European countries.

Ghanaian outlets have reported that the Black Stars could be given a major boost before the showpiece in Qatar as three English-born players prepare to commit to playing for the African giants.

Brighton Hove Albion's Tariq Lamptey, Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi and Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah could reportedly turn out for Ghana this year, with all three of them currently not in Gareth Southgate's plans for England.

If they do indeed avail themselves for the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists, they would join a long list of promising and talented footballers to eventually decide to represent African countries after constant snubs from the nations in which they were born.

Sebastien Haller, for example, gave up on his aspirations of playing for France on the biggest stage in 2020 after he put his hand up for selection for the Ivory Coast. The 27-year-old has since made 14 appearances for the Elephants, including four at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations.

Ex-England U21 international Ademola Lookman made his debut for Nigeria earlier this year in their third-round qualification matches against Ghana after it became clear he would not be called upon for the Three Lions.

In March 2022, Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was a regular feature for France's youth teams growing up, turned out for Mali, thus ending his ambition of representing Les Bleus at the highest level.

Of the three EPL-based stars reportedly set to put themselves in contention to play for Ghana at the World Cup, only Hudson-Odoi has appeared for England on the senior stage.
