Egypt's hopes of winning an eighth AFCON crown appear in jeopardy after captain Salah was substituted after 45 minutes in their second match of the tournament, a 2-2 draw with Ghana.
The 31-year-old suffered a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him sidelined until the end of the month, with the Pharaohs still searching for their first win of this edition.
Salah scored and assisted in their opening game of the competition, a 2-2 draw with Mozambique, but was unable to continue against the Black Stars.
As confirmed by the Egypt Football Association on the weekend, the winger will now return to England to undergo treatment at Liverpool.
"The Egyptian FA announces that Salah will now travel to England to receive treatment with the hope that he will join the Egyptian national team if it qualifies for the semi-finals," the statement read, according to Daily Post.
Salah is four appearances away from a century of games for his country, after making his debut in 2011.
The former Chelsea player has, as per Transfermarkt, netted on 54 occasions for Egypt and assisted a further 32 goals.

On two points, Egypt will need a victory over Group B winners Cape Verde on Monday night to secure a place in the next round of the tournament, although a draw could also see them advance depending on how Ghana's clash with Mozambique turns out.
