Last week, African football's governing body confirmed that Morocco will host the 35th edition of the continental showpiece in two years' time.

The upcoming AFCON in the Ivory Coast was set to be hosted during the off-season, but due to torrential rain in the country in June and July, it was moved to its traditional hosting period in the mid-season.

CAF vice-president Ahmed Yahya has now revealed that the custodian of African football is looking to revive its plans of an off-season AFCON when the competition heads to the home of the Atlas Lions.

"At the present time, our desire is to play the tournament in the summer," the second vice-president of CAF told CANAL+ SPORT.

This will be the first AFCON since 2019 that will be held after all the major leagues of the world have concluded, but with FIFA planning to host a Club World Cup during the same time, CAF are facing a potential stumbling block in their ambitions.

The Mauritanian executive has, however, ensured that they are in active discussions with the Swiss-based institution in order to circumvent this issue.

"We are aware that the Club World Cup will be held in June 2025, but there are already negotiations between CAF and FIFA to find a solution," he added.

"We are looking for the interest of the African Cup of Nations and the interest of the tournament to be held in the summer, because this is the time when players are available after the end of the leagues, more than was the case in January."
