Kaizer Chiefs shocked the local football fraternity when they announced that one of their favourite sons, Itumeleng Khune, would be released. This caused a mini uproar amongst the Amakhosi fans after no deal was reached for the player to extend his stay with the club.
Despite fans angered by what had transpired, here are reasons why the supporters won't be angry at Khune for too long.
He Is A National Hero
Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo played for bitter rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan. Let's not forget he later joined Juventus, who are arch enemies to both Milan outfits. With him being an Italian hero, he is loved by millions in his country. This can be likened to Khune's current position. Khune is yet to decide his next move, but his status as a South African and Bafana Bafana icon may help him when it comes to the fans showing mercy.
More Than A Decade of Unrivalled Service
Not many modern day footballers can boast a career span of more than 10 years at one club, particularly in the Premier Soccer League. Khune's allegiance with Chiefs, in this regard, could ease the minds of the most loyal and patriotic fans.
Fans Already Wishing Khune Well
Many supporters have taken to social media in wishing Khune well with his future endeavours. That in itself could be an attempt to make peace with the idea of Khune not being a Khosi anymore.
Do you think fans will forgive Khune for leaving Chiefs?
