Los Blancos are reportedly in urgent need of a central defender following Eder Militao's second anterior cruciate ligament injury, but despite the availability of their former captain, the Spanish giants will not be turning to their former captain.

The 38-year-old Ramos, who left Sevilla last year after his contract expired, is yet to find a new club and has not announced his retirement. In the wake of Militao's injury,

Ramos posted a video on Instagram showcasing his impressive physical condition, leading to speculation that he could be a viable option for Madrid, especially as a free agent.

However, despite the natural link to the club, Diario AS report that Real Madrid have decided against re-signing their iconic defender.

According to the Spanish outlet, a decision was made by the club's board and president on Sunday afternoon, with the unanimous conclusion that Ramos' time at the Santiago Bernabéu has come to an end.

The club feels that Ramos is no longer at the level required to contribute at the highest level, and re-signing him would also mean mending fractured relations following his controversial exit in 2021 after protracted and tense contract negotiations.

While Ramos may have been an immediate option, the decision is clear: Real Madrid will not be signing him as a stopgap solution.

Instead, the club has already begun identifying other potential targets to reinforce their defensive options, though it seems any signing will have to wait until the January transfer window.

In the meantime, Madrid will rely on the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Jesus Vallejo, Raul Asencio, and Aurelien Tchouameni to fill in at centre-back. Asencio, in particular, impressed on his debut last Saturday, earning a clean sheet and an assist after replacing Militao during the match.
