The Pressure Is On Mayo, Not Downs Or Chiefs

The Pressure Is On Mayo, Not Downs Or Chiefs

Cape Town City are cautious regarding the situation with Khanyisa Mayo amid growing interest in the player's services.

Mayo finished the 2023/24 season with 10 League goals and was only six behind Golden Boot winner Tshegofatso Mabasa of Orlando Pirates.

Mayo, 25, netted 11 times from 31 matches across all competitions, and bagged two assists to add to his numbers.

At the end of the 2022/23 season, Mayo finished as the joint top goal-scorer with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile on 12 goals, and he has been one of the first names on coach Eric Tinkler's line-ups at the Citizens.

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have all been linked with the forward although City have made their intensions clear about his future with the club by tying him on a long-term contract.

Last year, City offered Mayo a new five-year contract, which should keep him at the club until June 2028, although the club could listen if a good offer is made for the Bafana Bafana player.

However, any club keen on securing the player's services will need to meet the Mother City club's asking price, which has been set at over R30 million by club boss, John Comitis.

Recent reports have linked Mayo with a potential move to North Africa, although sources close to City have indicated that the player remains in the plans for Tinkler and the club in their pursuit of a better run in the league and competing for trophies in the new season.

"Khanyisa Mayo is an important player for Cape Town City, and for the club it is not just about selling players for the sake of it but the success. The club wants to do well in the League and compete for trophies, and he is an integral of those plans. As you can see, the club has been beefing up with some top players, and that's got to do with the plans for a successful season," said the source.

As such if Mayo is looking for a big move abroad or within South Africa, the pressure is on his camp to secure such a transfer. Despite being among the leading PSL scorers in recent seasons, Mayo still finds himself at Cape Town City and has been unable to break into the Bafana Bafana squad.
