African Siblings In Football

Today the Fan Park crew has a look at some of the most famous siblings who have graced some of the biggest stages in world football.

Jerome & Kevin-Prince Boateng

Both brothers are of Ghanaian descent, with Jerome choosing to represent Germany and Kevin-Prince deciding to represent Ghana. Between the pair, they’ve played for clubs like AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Schalke, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur, Hertha Berlin, Genoa, Dortmund, Hamburg and Manchester City.

Ibrahim, Kolo & Yaya Toure

Kolo first burst on to the scene in 2002 when he joined Arsenal in the Premier League. He went on to have a long and successful career in London before moving to Manchester City in 2009, and later joined Liverpool in 2013. His younger brother Yaya played for Barcelona, but has enjoyed most of his success at Manchester City. Between the two, they’ve played over 200 games for Ivory Coast. Sadly, Ibrahim Toure, who also played professionally, passed away in 2014 after a short battle with cancer.

Lucky & Itumeleng Khune

Itumeleng, who has only ever played for Kaizer Chiefs, has had a successful career at Amakhosi and captains both club and country. On the contrary, Itumeleng’s first love in sport was cricket, and he grew up idolising former spin-bowler Nicky Boje. His brother, Lucky, previously played for Chiefs but has moved to Chippa United.

Mathias, Florentin and Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba, who currently plays for Juventus, is undoubtedly the most successful of the brothers, but he has two older twin brothers - Mathias who plays for Crawley Town in England, and Florentin, who plays his football at Saint Etienne in France. While Paul is already one of the first names on the France team sheet, his brother Florentin plays internationally for Guinea.

Jordan, Andre & Ibrahim Ayew

All three of these Ghanaian brothers have represented their national team, with Andre and Jordan arguably being the more talked about. Between the trio, they’ve played for clubs like Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Arles-Avignon and Zamalek. Their father is the great Abedi Pele, who was one of Ghana’s most successful captains.

With their family genes evidently strong, what do you think makes these siblings successful? Let us know in the comments section below.
