Hello fellow Buccaneers! As the days draw ever closer to laying Senzo Meyiwa's body to rest, I thought I would take a look at the various meanings behind his name.
Upon taking a closer look at two meanings behind Meyiwa's first name, I find it quite fitting that he was bestowed with the power of the name Senzo.
Seeing as we are from Africa, I thought it best to start with the translation from Zulu. I am sure most of you would know that Senzo actually means 'an act'.
This is quite phenomenal because our shot-stopper was one hell of a charismatic player and person. He was known for his vibrant displays, big smile and his alluring personality.
On the field, he was always putting on displays, shouting, celebrating manically and, basically, putting on 'an act'.
Many who knew him have confirmed that the personality he portrayed on the field was exactly the same off the park.
The second meaning I have uncovered is one in Italian. Senzo in Italian means 'without' or 'nothing', depending on the usage…
This again is quite fitting. Meyiwa left us; he left a huge void in our hearts and one that makes us feel like we can't live without him.
Bucs cannot play without him, his spirit, his leadership and passion. We simply don't want to be without him, EVER! He also didn't concede a goal for Bafana- nothing, zero, zilch.
People always wonder why their parents gave them the name they did. Well, we now know why. There really was no better way to describe our leader other than SENZO!!
What are your thoughts behind the meaning?
