The story

Cape Town City prodigy, Emile Witbooi made history as the ninth youngest player to debut in South African football. He came on as a substitute in the second half of Cape Town City's 2-0 defeat to AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership on Sunday.

At just 16 years, six months, and five days old, he became the 13th player under 17 to make a professional debut in South Africa's top flight.

Witbooi has already represented South Africa at the under-20 level, had trials in Europe with Chelsea FC, and is highly regarded as a promising talent.

He is the son of the ever skillful, Surprise Ralani, who enjoyed much of his career in Scandinavia before returning to South Africa to play for Cape Town City, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Cape Town Spurs.

Ralani, who now plies his trade Hungry Lions F.C in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, took to Instagram to pay tribute to Emile on his latest career milestone.

"A father's joy knows no bounds when his son reaches for the stars and succeeds. Super Proud of you my son. Congratulations on your first professional game. The world is yours," wrote Ralani in the caption to his IG post, featuring a gallery of Emile's football journey.
