The story

For the first time in the club's history, Philadelphia Union have kicked off the MLS season with three wins in-a-row, a perfect start for South African coach Bradley Carnell and countryman in defence, Olwethu Makhanya.

Carnell's Union made three wins on the spin with a 2-0 win over New England on Sunday, a win that took them to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Makhanya has gained the trust of Carnell after starting in three of The Union's successful league matches so far this season. He opened up about the chance he's getting under the former Bafana Bafana defender.

"It's an opportunity that I've been working really hard for and praying for. Now that it's happening, I feel really blessed. I'm trying to make sure that I use the opportunity and help the team wherever I can," said the 20-year-old centre back, as quoted by his club in a sponsored post with All State, a US sports insurance company.

Take a look:

It comes as no surprise that the Durban-born, ex-Stellenbosch FC baller's confidence is growing in leaps and bounds. Makhanya recently brought some South African flair to US shores.

In Sunday's win over New England, Makhanya showcased some impressive pieces of skill to create a goal scoring chance for his side.
