With the South African national women's team taking on Sweden in a freindly in Cape Town on Sunday, hee are some facts related to the game!
The country has been buzzing about having the opportunity to watch a national football side once again as the last time we did so it was Bafana Bafana's disappointing inability to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
However, unlike the men's team, Banyana Banyana are a winning side so there should be a lot to cheer about during Sunday's fixture. Here's what you should keep in mind should you be planning to watch the game:
1. Banyana Are The Best Female Team On The Continent
About two weeks back, coach Desiree Ellis' ladies were presented with the CAF National Women's Team of the Year award after a successful 2017 that saw them claim the COSAFA Women's Championship Trophy.
2. Sweden Are Ranked In The Top 10 In The World
Sweden's FIFA ranking adds an extra element to this game, as this is not simply an entertaining friendly, but an opportunity for the ladies to measure themselves against one of the best teams in the world as they have already proved themselves on the continent.
3. Coach Ellis Made History
Hailed as one of the best coaches in South Africa, Ellis has made history as being the only person (male or female) ever to win the Cosafa Cup as both a player and a coach. With so much success, many have been wondering why she is simply the interim coach and has not been given the position permanently yet.
4. Janine Van Wyk Is The Most Capped Player
Team captain Janine van Wyk is the most capped national team player (male and female) in South Africa's history. She made her debut in 2005, at just 18, and scored an incredible free-kick against Nigeria. She now plies her trade in the US with Houston Dash.
