Are We Finally Seeing True South African Football Again?

Are We Finally Seeing True South African Football Again?

We as South African football fans can be proud that locally, we boast a very unique league and style of play.

The England fans are accustomed to fast, rugged and aggressive football. In Germany, fans are treated to usual German efficiency with direct football. The fans of Spain take pride in their Tiki-Taka brand of football, with a team like Barcelona being the pioneer behind the style of play.

Locally though, our Diski style of football may have been forgotten in recent times, but I do feel we could be going back to the days where 'Kasi flavour' and 'Diski' was something fans were treated to when visiting the stadiums.

Yesterday, Mamelodi Sundowns and Mpumalanga Black Aces squared off in what was an exciting Nedbank Cup quarter-final fixture, with Downs coming off as winners at the end of the game.

The fixture was largely remembered for the pure South African style of football that was played on the day. Names like Themba Zwane and Lindokuhle Mbatha thrilled fans with their fine touches and scratches on the ball.

Also, we should not forget the emergence of Orlando Pirates winger Thabo Rakhale. His fearless confidence in showing off his skills may have rubbed off on the rest of the PSL, as we are seeing more creative players playing the game the South African way… with style and flair.

I feel that our style has always been there, but because of many coaches in the modern game frowning upon things such as individual skills and playing to the crowd's chants, players backed off from expressing themselves.

However, we could be in for exciting times if displays from our boys are anything to go by!

Do you agree?
