The story

South Africa kicked off their 2025 U17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Egypt in Group B at the Laarbi Zaouili Stadium in Casablanca on Monday evening.

The South Africans took an early lead through Mamelodi Sundowns' Simphiwe Mlondo, but found themselves trailing 3-1 after just 18 minutes.

However, coach Vela Khumalo's troops staged a comeback, equalising at 3-3 by halftime, before securing the win with a ferocious Emile Witbooi goal in the second half.

The supporters who stayed up to watch Mzansi's next crop of talented ballers praised the team, with Man of the Match Witbooi, Mamelodi Sundowns' Selwyn Davids and brace-scorer Neo Bohloko of Kaizer Chiefs receiving plenty of love.
