After all the celebrations for the victory over Lesotho, Bafana Bafana face the possibility of losing the points if they are punished for an error of fielding a player deemed to have been ineligible.

Bafana cruised to a 2-0 victory over their neighbours at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday night, but Teboho Mokoena was on two yellow cards in the qualifiers and, according to the rules, should have been suspended.

Hugo Broos' side sit top of the Group C standings and are hoping that the issue does not affect their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

According to the FIFA World Cup qualifying rules, a player who receives two yellow cards in separate matches during the qualifiers should serve a suspension in the following match of the same qualifying campaign.

Mokoena was booked in the opening World Cup qualifier against Benin on matchday one and was in the referee's book again when the national team hosted Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein on matchday four. The team could face a points deduction.

It's understood that Lesotho did not pick up the error of including Mokoena in the team for the qualifier on Friday, but there is a chance that the team will not be punished with a deduction of points because the visitors did not report the matter in time.
