The world rankings for women's national teams have been updated, and Desiree Ellis' charges have dropped one place, now sitting 54th on the planet.
Despite recently winning back-to-back matches against Lesotho, the reigning African champions suffered an erratic 2024 in terms of results. They started the year with successive victories over Tanzania to progress to the fourth round of the Olympic qualifiers. However, they were defeated by Nigeria over two legs and ultimately failed to qualify for the sporting spectacle in Paris.
They managed to win and draw against Senegal before beginning their COSAFA Women's Cup campaign. Banyana went on to beat Namibia, Eswatini, Seychelles, and Mozambique en route to the competition's final but lost on penalties to Zambia.
The 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations champions also faced high-level opposition from outside of Africa in 2024, playing Jamaica twice, as well as Denmark and reigning European champions England. They were unable to secure victory in any of these outings. However, despite the inconsistent form, South Africa have only dropped one place in the world rankings.
