Despite playing the 2023/24 season in the Saudi Pro League, France head coach Didier Deschamps shocked many when he selected the 33-year-old defensive midfielder to be part of his squad at the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

Not only was he a surprise inclusion in the squad, but the Paris native would also start all six matches for Les Bleus en route to their semi-final berth, where they would be thwarted by eventual competition winners, Spain.

During the continental showpiece however, the diminutive midfield destroyer displayed that he could still play at the highest level in football and his performances caught the attention of West Ham United.

According to The Guardian, the Hammers have made the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner their priority signing for the holding midfielder role after they did not sign Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips permanently, following his loan stint at the London Stadium.

It is understood that new West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui initially wanted Alex Garcia from Girona, but the Spainard opted to sign for Bayer Leverkusen instead.

Now Kante seems to be the frontrunner for the position, as the same report has stated that Al-Ittihad and the east Londoners are currently in the process of getting a deal done.
