'I Don't Get Why 2nd Choice Ofori Is Starting At AFCON'

'I Don't Get Why 2nd Choice Ofori Is Starting At AFCON'

The decision to start Richard Ofori in goal for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations has caused a stir.

A former Ghana goalkeeper has slammed the national team coach's decision to start "second choice" Richard Ofori at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Manager Chris Hughton's decision to start the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper in their first match of the 2023 AFCON has drawn a sizeable amount of backlash from some quarters.

The shot-stopper was criticised for his perceived lapse of concentration, as he conceded late in Ghana's 2-1 shock defeat to Cape Verde after a mix-up with one of his defensive teammates.

The Black Stars are set to face Egypt on Thursday night and all eyes will be on who will start in goal, as the nation are desperate to avoid an early elimination from the tournament.

Former Ghana goalie between 2008 and 2010, William Amamoo, has since slammed the decision to start Ofori over Ati Zizgi despite his experience.

"Ati Zizgi had a lot of confidence after the World Cup. He did well during the tournament," Amamoo told Mothers FM.

"The defenders know his movement but I don't get why the coach used his second choice goalkeeper (Ofori) although he is an experienced goalkeeper.

"Now, the defenders will have to study him again because he was absent from the team for a long time through injuries.

"Ofori is good but he is not used to the current defenders.

"Ati Zizgi knows the defenders at the moment and I don't get why Ati Zizgi should be changed.

"Ofori should have been given about five friendlies for him to know his defenders before the AFCON."
