One of Europe's most iconic clubs has been knocked out of a cup competition by an amateur side.

In what is being called the "biggest shock in Dutch football", Ajax Amsterdam have been dumped out of the KNVB Cup by fourth division side USV Hercules.
The Dutch giants suffered a 3-2 defeat to the minnows away from home on Thursday night, the first time they have been beaten by an amateur side in their history.

The result adds to the wounds the four-time European Cup champions have been inflicted with in 2023, with Opta Sports claiming the team's 14 defeats this year is only worsened by the 17 they recorded in 1954.
After 16 matches so far in the Eredivisie this season, de Godenzonen are currently fifth on the table, having won just seven times.

The legendary club has had five different managers in 2023 – two of them interim bosses – with Alfred Schreuder, John Heitinga and Maurice Steijn all having taken charge of the team in this calendar year.
