Lionel Messi has been accused of breaking MLS rules moments after he scored his first league goal for the club on the weekend.

The 36-year-old started on the bench in Inter Miami's 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls in the early hours of Sunday morning, but impacted the game after being introduced as a second-half substitute.

Messi added to his impressive goals tally following a brilliant move, much to the delight of the entire stadium in New York, who all seemed to be there to see the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner in action.

However, the Daily Mirror reports the Argentine caused a stir after the match when he did not speak to reporters, despite MLS executive vice-president of communications Dan Courtemanche saying before the game that Messi will not be exempt from media duties.

According to Associated Press, Inter Miami spokeswoman Molly Dreska stated that the ex-Barcelona captain would not be available for any post-match interviews, which appears to be against the league's policy on the matter.

Messi has now found the back of the net on 11 occasions for the Herons since his arrival as a free agent, while he has also assisted a further three strikes.

Speaking after the encounter, head coach Gerardo Martino said the forward will need to be rested at times and insisted that the team must find a way to continue winning when he goes on international duty next month.
