Banyana Defeat South American Side Ahead Of World Cup

Banyana Banyana secured a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in their final warm-up clash before the FIFA Women's World Cup in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The South African national side landed in New Zealand last week to begin their final preparations for the World Cup after their dispute with SAFA was sorted on 5 July 2023.

After the the drama surrounding the send-off clash against Botswana, coach Desiree Ellis was able to field a strong side to take on the South Americans at the Nga Puna Wai Sport Complex.

Banyana got the opening goal after 31 minutes, with Thembi Kgatlana finding the back of the net on her return to the national set-up.

Ellis opted for a double change at the start of the second half, as Linda Motlhalo and Kholosa Biyana making way for Robyn Moodaly and Nomvula Kgoale.

The reigning African champions would go on to grab a second goal ten minutes into the second half through Hildah Magaia, who found the back of the net direct from a free-kick.

South Africa will now turn their attention to their opening game at the World Cup against Sweden on 23 July at Wellington Regional Stadium.
