Breaking Down The Rumour: Kane To Bayern

Breaking Down The Rumour: Kane To Bayern

Manchester United have been priced out of a deal for Harry Kane, leaving Bayern Munich as firm favourites to sign England's captain and all-time record goalscorer. Here is a breakdown of the transfer rumour currently stealing the headlines!

Kane's reputation in England

Despite having taken part in just five UEFA Champions League seasons since his breakthrough at Tottenham Hotspur in the 2013/14 season, Kane is considered among the best centre-forwards in football. His reputation worldwide might not compare to someone like Robert Lewandowski, or even Erling Haaland, but he is certainly of the true world-class ilk, having proved his prowess in front of goal time and time again in a Spurs side that hasn't always competed with the big boys. Kane is just 47 goals away from drawing level with Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League scoring record (260 goals) after he added 30 league strikes to his name in the latest campaign. Should he remain in England for the foreseeable future, it's likely he will go down as the greatest goalscorer the division has seen, but, with rumours suggesting he won't sign a new deal in north London and with Spurs unlikely to be willing to allow him to leave for free next year, could it be possible that he prioritises potential collective achievements over personal gains going forward having never won a trophy in England?

Ten Hag's priority target at United

In 2021, Kane emerged as a key target for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, but their attempts to sign him were ultimately in vain as Spurs flat-out refused to sell the striker, who went as far as skipping training sessions to force a move to the Etihad Stadium. Kane was eventually fined for his actions, and City went on to poach Haaland from Borussia Dortmund 12 months later. Ahead of this transfer window, England's skipper became a priority target for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United until Spurs made it crystal-clear they weren't going to negotiate his departure to a direct Premier League rival, unchanged in their stance from two years ago. The Red Devils are believed to have since pulled out of the race to sign the 29-year-old, whose injury issues seem to be behind him after he impressively played in all of Spurs' 38 league games last term.

Is he off to Germany?

Due to Spurs' stubbornness and United's apparent withdrawn interest, Bundesliga champions Bayern are believed to be favourites to land Kane's signature after submitting a €70 million (R1.4 billion) bid for his services this week. The theory is that the Bavarians wouldn't have taken those formal steps had they not received an indication from the player that he would be willing to make the move, with reports in Germany suggesting he has done just that behind the scenes. The Lilywhites have reportedly turned down Bayern's initial approach, but this isn't where this story is expected to end. In fact, it is just the beginning of what could become a long and drawn-out transfer saga involving one of the sport's most lethal hitmen. The latest news suggests Bayern will be back with an improved offer in the coming days as they are confident they can make Kane the club's marquee acquisition of the window, a signing that would undoubtedly boost Thomas Tuchel's chances of success in Germany.
