Following his unauthorised trip to the Middle East, where he was fulfilling ambassadorial duties, he was swiftly handed a two-week suspension.
The debacle has left his future at the club in major doubt, with his contract at the Ligue 1 leaders expiring in June and the Argentine unlikely to sign a new deal.
PSG's punishment means Messi will only return for the club with three matches remaining in the league, but Le Parisien suggests that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner could terminate his contract before this season ends.
Messi reportedly informed the club a month ago that he did not want to extend his stay in the country's capital, after having already turned down an extension offer earlier in this campaign.
The board were said to be left unhappy with the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner's insistence on leaving, with his trip to Saudi Arabia seemingly proving to be the final straw.
For now, it appears the relationship between the player and club has broken down amid reports he could return to Barcelona as a free agent for the coming season.
