Having just been called up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a LaLiga star has revealed why he decided to make the international allegiance switch from Spain to Ghana.
Senegal Chief Makes Big Mane World Cup Admission
Earlier this year, Athletic Bilbao star Inaki Williams made the life-changing decision to represent the Ghanaian national team.
The 28-year-old, who was born in Spain, had managed to only earn one cap for La Roja but six years on from that lone appearance for the European nation, the speedy striker is now a member of the Black Stars.
His decision to now represent the country of his ancestry came after the west Africans successfully qualified for the World Cup in Qatar, but Williams insists that he was not chasing the glory of being in the Middle East when he made the choice.
"It wasn't an easy decision to make," Williams told BBC Sport Africa.
"I had to consult with my family and loved ones, because the decision would impact me during the next years of my career - not only in sporting terms but also on a personal level, because it is much more than football.
"The federation had been in contact.
"I told my grandfather, who told me it would be a dream for him to see me in the national team jersey. He is 90. He said he doesn't have long to live, but that he would like to see me play in a World Cup with the national team.
"When he told me those words, I didn't have to think any more.
"It's a decision I've taken with my heart, regardless of what people may think or say - that maybe I am only playing for Ghana because they have qualified for the World Cup."
