Having won an impressive 12 trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns, which includes six league titles, two Nedbank Cup titles, two Telkom Knockout Cup titles, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup titles – Kekana has etched his name into the Brazilians’ folklore.
He remains actively part of the game as he joined the Public Broadcaster as a pundit, while he is a regular contributor to the Sundowns Pitchside Podcast.
Kekana has set his sights beyond the TV screen to the touchline however, as he recently shared his ambitions to complete his coaching badges before pursuing a coaching career.
“Well, I'm busy with my coaching courses, which the next course will be in March next year,” he told journalists at the Philly’s Games opening day in Tembisa.
“I'm sure I'll take part in that one. I just want to equip myself with with these badges, and I'd love to see myself on the touchline one day, because I always believe that the knowledge that I acquired over these years has to be shared with the new generation of South African footballers, and I think we are the right people to do that because we are the reference. If a kid wants to score from the centre line, he can easily think, I can try what Hlompho Kekana played, so those are the references and I think to be next to them and share the knowledge, the information the experience of the game, I think that will help and hopefully it works.
“So now I've got the Scottish C [License]. I've got the SAFA D [License]. I'm gonna go for SAFA C [License] soon. From there, I'm sure I'll go for more because the more you get, the more you wanna improve and then we always say the game improves all the time. I wanna have those badges and I'm sure by the time I turn 40, I'll have those badges,” he explained.
