UEFA Champions League

Result: Juventus 2-1 Olympique Lyon (2-2 on aggregate - Lyon advance on away goals rule)

Date: 07 August 2020

Venue: Allianz Stadium

Juventus bowed out of the UEFA Champions League on the away goals rule, despite Cristiano Ronaldo netting a brace on Friday night.

Bianconeri made just two changes from the side that lost 1-0 in the first-leg in Lyon, as Federico Bernardeschi and Gonzalo Higuain replaced Danilo and Paulo Dybala in the line-up.

The visitors put Juventus under pressure in the early stages and they forced Maurizio Sarri's charges to concede a penalty in the tenth minute after Rodrigo Bentancur brought down Houssem Aouar. Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay stepped up and made no mistake with a panenka to make it 2-0 on aggregate.

The hosts came close to levelling matters in the 20th minute after Bernardeschi got past two defenders on the byline and also beat shot-stopper Anthony Lopes to the ball but Marcelo made a last ditch tackle to preserve Lyon's lead.

The pressure from the Old Lady finally paid off just three minutes before the break as they were awarded a penalty after Miralem Pjanic's shot hit Depay's arm inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot after a Video Assistant Referee review.

Ronaldo went up to take the spot-kick and found the equaliser for Juventus with a side-footed finish into the bottom corner to keep his side in the contest.

Lyon were made to pay for the slow start to the second half, as Ronaldo gave Juventus a 2-1 lead with a stunning strike from distance on the hour mark but the hosts still needed another

Lyon had a penalty appeal reviewed by the VAR in the last ten minutes after Aaron Ramsey clipped Aouar inside the box but nothing came from it, much to the relief of the Juventus players.

The hosts threw everything forward in search of a third goal in the latter stages of the second half, but the French side did well to frustrate the Italian champions and held on to secure a spot in the quarter-finals on the away goals' rule after a 2-2 draw on aggregate.
