Chelsea have reportedly approached Lionel Messi’s father to gauge whether his son would be prepared to leave Barcelona for £200 million this summer.
Spanish paper Sport report that the Blues have taken first steps to lure Messi to Stamford Bridge, trying to make the most of the Blaugrana’s first crisis in 2015.
Following their 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad, which Messi and Neymar started from the bench, the club has released sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta on Monday.
In addition, the Argentine had missed Monday’s open training session due to gastroenteritis. Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, was reportedly angered by Messi’s absence and his superstar has publically apologized for his absence in the meantime.
The 27-year-old has further sparked speculation after he followed Chelsea’s official Instagram account, as well as the club’s stars Thibaut Courtois and Filipe Luis (among 97 other accounts including Manchester City and his own club).
Despite signing a new long-term contract last summer, Messi already hinted in November that he could leave Camp Nou and not retire in Spain.
Chelsea are understood to use the controversy around the four-time Ballon d’Or winner to lure him to England, where he would join his close friend Cesc Fabregas.
However, it is yet to be seen whether Chelsea would indeed splash out £200 million on Messi in times of Financial Fair Play and whether the Argentine really wants to leave the only club he has ever played for.
