Result: Athletic Bilbao 1-0 FC Barcelona
Date: 06 February 2020
Venue: San Mames
It was a night of big shocks in the Copa del Rey as FC Barcelona were sent packing after losing 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Thursday evening
Barca manager Quique Setien made only change from the win over Levante, as Sergi Roberto started ahead of Antoine Griezmann while rising teenage star Anssumane Fati retained his place alongside Lionel Messi upfront.
Inaki Williams almost gave Bilbao a dream start with a neat flick from a corner at the back post but his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.
Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen almost gifted the hosts the opening goal in the 32nd minute after playing a ball straight to Raul Garcia, who could only drag his shot wide from the edge of the box.
With the first half ending goalless, the early exchanges of the second stanza were cagey and Setien made his first change three minutes before the hour-mark, as Griezmann came on for Fati.
Blaugrana had a penalty appeal in the 65th minute after Ander Capa appeared to have brought down Frenkie de Jong, who latched onto a through ball from Griezmann but the referee was not persuaded.
Griezmann nearly broke the deadlock for Barca in the 72nd minute after a cut-back from Roberto found the Frenchman unmarked in the box but his low shot was saved by Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon.
With time running out, Messi almost snatched the winner two minutes before time after going through from Arthur's pass but his shot was turned away by Simon.
However, San Mames was sent into a frenzy moments later when Williams sealed the clincher for Athletic with a header on the edge of the box that found the bottom corner after a cross from Ibai Gomez to send Bilbao to the final four.
