Germans Close In On World Cup

Group C leaders Germany beat neighbours Austria 3-0 tonight to take them to 19 points in their World Cup Qualifying group and are now just two wins away from qualifying for Brazil.

The opening quarter at the Allianz-Arena saw Germany doing most of the attacking, but they were thwarted by an energetic Austrian team, who pressed hard to stop any movement

Miroslav Klose looked to have opened the scoring in the 30th minute but a brilliant save from Robert Almer denied him.

Just three minutes later Klose did give the Germans the lead, thanks to a great cross from Thomas Mueller. This was Klose's 68th goal for Germany, tying him with Gerd Muller as the country's all-time leading scorer.

The Germans began to dominate proceedings and before half-time Klose had a few chances to break the record, but it remained 1-0 going into the break.

Five minutes into the second-half, after a somewhat shaky start,  Toni Kroos made it two for Germany. Marco Reus picked up a loose ball just inside the area and laid it back for Kroos, his first-time effort flying in to the corner.

Klose thought for a moment he had broken the record, but his effort in the 77th minute was ruled offside.

Mueller made it 3-0 in the 88th minute after a nice team effort. Kroos found substitute Benedikt Howedes in space down the left and he cut the ball back into the box for Mueller to tap in an easy finish.
