Reports suggest that Barcelona are willing to sell three of their star players in an effort to bring Lionel Messi back to the club next season.
Mane Unhappy? Bayern Munich Chief Responds
Despite improving Xavi Hernandez's first team squad considerably during the off-season transfer window, Barca still remain in a volatile financial position.
The Blaugrana were able to pull off the signings of Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, Robert Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha with the help of some savvy business as well as the pulling of various "economic levers".
While selling part of their in-house studio and future television rights did help lessen the economic burden placed on the club by its previous administration, the Catalans are still not where they want to be fiscally.
To become financially stable once again, the club still needs to slash their wage bill considerably.
According to Sport, Barca's current salaries amount to £546 million (R10.6 billion), and they would like to reduce that figure by at least £150 million (R2.9 billion), with the ideal wage bill considered to be between £376 million (R7.3 billion) and £402 million (R7.8 billion).
This could spell the end for the likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, who are expected to be sold or moved on as a result.
The trio have enjoyed trophy-laden careers during their time at the Camp Nou, and between them have close to 2 000 appearances for the club, but they are among the team's highest earners and are approaching their mid-thirties.
Messi 'Has A Dig' At Real's 2021/22 UCL Victory
It is with their departures that the club could possibly bring Lionel Messi back once his contract with Paris Saint-Germain concludes at the end of this season.
It was reported earlier this week that the club's vice-president of economics Eduard Romeu said the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's return could be financially viable once the 2022/23 campaign ends.
