'What Did Ernst Middendorp Expect From Daniel Akpeyi?'

'What Did Ernst Middendorp Expect From Daniel Akpeyi?'

Uthini?

Kaizer Chiefs' goalkeeping misery continues as Daniel Akpeyi's howler cost the team in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Polokwane City. Speaking to reporters after the game, head coach Ernst Middendorp expressed his frustrations with the incident. But he is not the only frustrated one; fans are also unhappy with the goalkeeper and the technical staff at Chiefs.

Soccer Laduma reader and regular contributor Flipping Lyf seems to have low expectations of Akpeyi and wants goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma to be given a chance instead:

"What do you expect from a keeper who came from a team that is fighting relegation instead of sticking with [Virgil] Vries to learn from his mistakes? Give the young Bvuma enough chances, the boy is ready to stand between the sticks!"

For fans such as Mutumbukatsikoni, Middendorp (also known as "Middendraw" among fans for his results during his first tenure at Chiefs) is the problem. The Soccer Laduma reader thinks the coach is not owning up to his goalkeepers' mistakes and this does not motivate them to improve and do better:

"This tells you the coach is irresponsible. Distancing himself from the errors means he has no confidence in his goalkeepers. It does not even motivate them to do better. Coach Micho [Milutin Sredojevic of Orlando Pirates] is the real deal. [Wayne] Sandilands made costly errors but he supported him. Now his confidence is back and he has pulled out some great saves since he was brought back into the first team. I'm so disappointed in Middendraw."

While Chiefs are having problems in the goalkeeping department since first choice stopper Itumeleng Khune's injury, Fredstar sees a bigger problem at the club. The Soccer Laduma reader is questioning whether Amakhosi are prepared for the day Khune retires:

"What will happen to Chiefs when Khune retires? Seems like the coach and Chiefs managers don't have other potential goalkeepers."
