While some fans are applauding Mamelodi Sundowns for rewarding captain Hlompho Kekana with a new long-term contract, others are asking why they are not refreshing their squad.
Downs revealed on Thursday that Kekana had signed a new 4-year contract, which will keep him at the club until 2024, by that time the Zebediele-born midfielder will be well past his 39th birthday.
Kekana has been spectacular for Downs over the years, having joined them from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2011.
The 35-year-old has spearheaded not only Sundowns' domestic dominance, but also their continental ambitions, which saw them lift the coveted CAF Champions League trophy in 2016.
He has played no bit part in Pitso Mosimane's side, despite his age, Kekana has been a pivotal part of Pitso Mosimane's plans, regularly contributing with his signature long range strikes.
Kekana's new deal comes as a reward for his commitment as well as his role as a leader in the Downs dressing room.
